BONAWATT Bythos is a high end integrated hybrid tube amplifier that brings technologies developed for the larger Triton into a new, more compact design. It combines a true active tube preamplifier with a high performance solid state power stage, delivering the tonal character and spaciousness of tube amplification without the typical limitations of smaller conventional tube amplifiers.
The preamplifier section is based on a 12AX7 tube. As in the Triton, the tube does not serve as a decorative unity gain buffer, but operates as a genuine gain stage that actively shapes the amplifier’s tonal character. This preserves a rich midrange, natural vocals, convincing soundstage depth and the effortless presentation associated with a well designed tube audio signal path.
Bythos uses ultra quiet, regulated power supplies for its analogue section. Unlike the Triton, it does not use a tube rectifier, which allowed us to create a significantly lower and more compact chassis while retaining a fully active tube preamplifier.
Between the tube stage and the power amplifier, BONAWATT’s proprietary low noise buffer circuit uses MOSFET transistors and JFET input amplifiers. This is an evolution of the architecture previously developed and proven in the Triton. The buffer provides the tube with optimal operating conditions while preparing the signal to drive the high current power stage. The result combines a refined and spacious presentation with fast bass, high dynamics and precise control of the loudspeaker drivers.
The amplifier delivers 2 × 140 W RMS of continuous power with both channels driven. The power stage architecture provides 280 W RMS of continuous power, while a single channel can deliver 245 W at 8 Ω and 280 W at 4 Ω. This gives Bythos substantial dynamic headroom despite its significantly smaller dimensions and lower weight compared with our current flagship hybrid amplifier, the Triton. Standard connectivity includes three analogue RCA inputs and a balanced XLR input. Bythos therefore does not require an expansion card for basic balanced XLR connectivity, leaving the BAX™ slot available for further expansion with the MBD 1S DAC or an MM or MM/MC phono preamplifier module.
The single available BAX™ expansion slot can be used to install a DAC, PHONO MM/MC preamplifier, wireless audio receiver or future modules developed for the BAX™ platform.
The BAX™ system changes the way an integrated amplifier can be designed and used. Instead of purchasing an amplifier with a fixed set of functions selected by the manufacturer, users can configure the electronics to suit their system and requirements. In the future, the expansion card can be replaced to add new functionality and adapt the amplifier without replacing the entire unit.
Bythos is operated using BONAWATT’s characteristic multifunction control knob and button, as well as the RC 1 or RC 2 remote control. The built in electronic VU meter can be used during listening or switched off completely, leaving the front panel in a minimalist form with only the volume indication visible or with the display fully dimmed.
This Polish hybrid integrated amplifier also introduces a new design direction for BONAWATT. The low profile chassis, strongly chamfered corners and asymmetrical geometric front panel create a more contemporary form than the larger designs in the BONAWATT range. The amplifier rests on three IsoAcoustics vibration isolators, included as standard equipment. The three point support provides stable contact with the supporting surface and is particularly well suited to the lightweight, rigid construction of this series.
Bythos can serve as a complete audio system in a single enclosure or as an alternative to a separate system consisting of the BONAWATT Proteus line preamplifier combined with the BONAWATT Pallas power amplifier. All three designs share a common visual language and are available in three distinctive BONAWATT finishes.
